Successful Seismic Testing of HV Station Post Insulators

Bonneville Power testing-

An 1800kV BIL (500kV line V), 2900lb station post was tested on the shaker table at Portland State University.  A 500kV disconnect switch was attached at the top making it a 15' assembly. BPA's requirements are 0.7G on the single dimension shaker table.  The assembly was tested to the BPA required level, and passed fullyThe test team decided to intensify the shaker table to determine at what G-level the insulators would fail.  The shaker table operators maxed out the table at 1.3 G's and they could not fail the insulator. This is 180% above BPA's requirements.  A video of the 1.3G test is available upon request.

Southern CA Edison testing-

Static tests were performed on (2) 230kV and (1) 500kV designs per SCE substation post requirements.  The insulators were 1050kV BIL, 3000lb (for 230kV), 1050kV BIL, 3500lB (for 230kV), and a 1800kV BIL, 4000lb (for 500kV).  SCE requires a 'force-deflection' test above and beyond the standard ANSI testThe ANSI test requires a batch of insulators to meet (on average) the rated mechanical load with one pull.  Note the 'average' wording.  Individual insulators can actually fail below the rated cantilever strength and still meet ANSI requirements.  Now, with the 'force-deflection' test, SCE requires 6 push-pull cycles on a single insulator; (3) at 66% and (3) at 100% of full rated mechanical strength.  The reason that this test is very difficult to pass is due to the fact that after The first pull at 100% rated load often exceeds the elastic material property boundary of the porcelain.  The next 'push' at rated load will then fail the porcelain catastrophically.  The PPC insulators passed all the cycles of the push-pull at full rated load.  To put this in perspective, picture taking this 500kV insulator and mounting it horizontally.  This is an 1800kV BIL post, so it would cantilever outwards 12+ feet from the wall it is mounted to.  Now, hang a 2-ton SUV from the end of that post! This SUV example would be equivalent to a single pull in the force deflection test.  The SEVES/PPC HV post insulator passed the 100% push and pull with the same insulator 2 more times.

Secondary Oil Containment

SorbWeb Plus SOC Features

Kinectrics' economical SorbWeb Plus secondary oil containment system is an effective and reliable passive system that provides continuous protection against oil spills and leaks associated with transformers, capacitors, storage tank facilities and other oil-filled equipment. SorbWeb Plus SOC seals only on coming in contact with oil in the containment area. Until the system seals, it will allow water from rain or snowmelt to pass through its "smart" barrier layers without accumulating, while retaining any oil that might leak from the transformer.

SorbWeb Plus SOC Benefits

  • Engineered containment system using electrical utility best practices to contain rainfall event, deluge and transformer oil volume
  • Unique flexible design to fit equipment arrangement
  • Minimum site intrusion / disturbance required for installation
  • Passive secondary oil containment and leak management system
  • No maintenance costs
  • 24/7 protection in the event of a spill or leak
  • No mechanical or electrical control systems required

A unique design

SorbWeb Plus is a gravity-based subterranean system that surrounds oil-filled equipment with geosynthetic materials. The system effectively traps oil from catastrophic spills and leaks.

Some of the SorbWeb Plus system components are:

  • A synthetic impermeable liner
  • An adsorbent filter layer
  • A retention layer of oil-absorbing material that seals on contact with hydrocarbons

Transmission Line Clearance Issues?

LWS Has a Solution - The PhaseRaiser System

Increase structure height an additional 5', 10' or 15'

  NO Line Outage Required
  Economical Solution
  Low Impact Equipment Used
Field Training Included with Equipment Rental
No Loss of Structure Reliability or Decrease in Service Life

If you have groundline clearance problems or are needing to find innovative ways to increase line capacity, the PhaseRaiser lifting system is the answer. The PhaseRaiser system is proven to be more cost effective than new line construction, pole change-outs or bayoneting

To learn how the PhaseRaiser system can work for you, contact our engineering department with your structure type, pole sizes and the range of lifts required.

Laminated Wood Systems' engineering department will analyze existing structures and recommend the appropriate PhaseRaiser system or related support members.  In addition, you may use Power Line Systems' new PhaseRaiser Wizard to easily insert a PhaseRaiser into a PLS-POLE model for analysis of structure strength and verification of the improved clearances. The PhaseRaiser library is available for download from the PLS Online Library at www.powline.com/files/pls_pole.html.

NEW CUSHION-GRIP™ Suspension FROM PLP

The level of protection provided by the CUSHION-GRIP Suspensions is comparable to a bolted clamp over armor rods. This equates to a reduction in bending strain as high as 50% as compared to bare conductor in a bolted clamp. This reduction in bending strain can be directly related to an increase in overall conductor life.

At Glance Inspection

Toughened glass insulators cannot be punctured or be internally cracked.  Inspection requires a simple glance at the string, giving a complete and reliable assessment of the condition of the insulation. This means that a crew in a helicopter can inspect over 60 miles of line, or more, per hour.

Inspecting porcelain & composite insulators requires a  testing crew to visit each structure with insulator strings.  Inspecting porcelain insulators is difficult to do requiring buzzing of each unit.  Inspecting composite insulators is sometimes impossible.

NEW TOOLS &TEST SETS

Megger introduces the DELTA4000 Series

High-Voltage Insulation Diagnostics

Featuring rugged yet lightweight construction and designed to work reliably in high-interference areas like substation switchyards, Megger's DELTA4000 series 12-KV insulation diagnostic system offers time-saving, fully automatic power factor/tan delta and tip-up testing.  Also provided are facilities for manual measurements where the operator has full control to set the test parameters fro special testing requirements.

Accurate and dependable intelligent temperature correction, based on the actual condition of the test object, can be applied to results using a patented technique that works with data acquired from a separate dielectric frequency-response test.

Megger's DELTA4000 series test set offers comprehensive facilities for assessing the condition of electrical insulation in all types of high-voltage equipment, including transformers, bushings, circuit breakers, cables, lightning arrestors and rotating machinery.  They also can be used for measuring the excitation current of transformer windings.

To ensure accurate results are obtained even when the instrument is powered from a supply with poor voltage and frequency stability, the test sets generate their own test voltage, which is independent of the supply quality.  A further benefit of this approach is that it allows the test voltage to be varied in frequency for 1Hz to 500 Hz.

DELTA4000 series measure quantities include voltage, current, power loss, tan delta, power factor and capacitance.  Test results are stored in the unit and can be sent directly to a printer via USB.

Megger's New SMRT36 Realy Test Set

The Smart Solution For Protective Relay Testing. Smaller, lighter and with a higher output power than any other comparable three-phase instrument in the world, Megger's new SMRT 36 smart protective relay test set is ideally suited not only for testing today's installations and legacy plant, but also for meeting the future challenges associated with testing the smart grid.

Marking the advent of Megger's fourth generation of automated relay test sets, the SMRT 36 takes full advantage the company's patented developments to produce an instrument that offers higher output current, higher output power and greater precision than its predecessors, while addressing user demands for reduced size and weight - it weighs in at just 12 kg.
